In de nabije toekomst wil de regering in Spanje rechters vervangen door een kunstmatige intelligentie software, met de belofte om het rechtssysteem effectief te automatiseren en depolitiseren. Carmen Costa, een vooraanstaande rechter, is uitgenodigd om deze nieuwe procedure te beoordelen.

Deze maand zijn onze gastsprekers Cees Zweistra en Christine Bel. Cees Zweistra is filosoof, assistent professor aan de Erasmus School of Law en auteur van Sneller en beter – Het vraagstuk van technologie en AI in de rechtspraktijk. Na de film zal hij kort reflecteren op het vraagstuk ‘Kan er gerechtigheid bestaan zonder menselijkheid?’ Daarna zal Christine Bel, innovatiemanager AI voor Vrede, Recht, Veiligheid en Bestuur aan de TU Delft en Mondai, het gesprek met het publiek leiden.

Wanneer Alicia Kóvack, de maker van de THENTE 1-software, dood wordt aangetroffen, beseft ze dat haar leven in gevaar is en dat ze het zal moeten opnemen tegen de machtige belangen die spelen in de hoogste kringen van de staat. De Galiciër Simón Casal gaat een stap verder in het debat over de grenzen van kunstmatige intelligentie in een aangrijpende thriller over politieke samenzweringen.

Het feit dat het verhaal zich afspeelt in de nabije toekomst voegt een gevoel van urgentie toe; de discussies over kunstmatige intelligentie lijken akelig veel op onze werkelijkheden en het overbelaste rechtssysteem is herkenbaar. Actrice Veronica Echegui, die Carmen Costa speelt, is het middelpunt van het conflict: ze worstelt met haar loyaliteit aan de overleden directrice van het bedrijf, maar ook met haar geloof in een menswaardige rechtspraak. Carmens innerlijke strijd voert de film en geeft een belangrijke technologische kwestie een persoonlijk gezicht.

In the near future in Spain, the Government aims to replace judges with an Artificial Intelligence software, pledging to effectively automate and depoliticise the justice system. Carmen Costa, a distinguished judge, has been invited to assess this new procedure.

After the film, there will be an after-talk featuring Cees Zweistra and Christine Bel. Cees Zweistra is a philosopher, assistant professor at the Erasmus School of Law, and the author of Sneller en beter – Het vraagstuk van technologie en AI in de rechtspraktijk. He will give a short reflection on the question, “Can there be justice without humanity?” Afterwards, Christine Bel, Innovation Manager AI for Peace, Justice and Security at TU Delft and Mondai, will moderate a discussion with the audience.

When the THENTE 1 software’s creator Alicia Kóvack is found dead, she realises her life is in danger and that she will have to fight the powerful interests that are at play in the highest echelons of the State. Galician Simón Casal takes the debate the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence one step further in a gripping thriller of political conspiracies.

The fact that the story is set in the near future adds a feeling of urgency; the discussions on AI eerily resemble our realities and the overloaded judicial system appears familiar. Actress Veronica Echegui, playing Carmen Costa is the pivot of the conflict: she wrestles with her loyalty to the late top executive of the company, but also with her belief in a humane jurisdiction. Carmen’s inner process carries the film and provides an important technological issue a human face.
