Mahito, a boy trying to cope with his mother’s death, enters a world inhabited by both the living and the dead. In this realm, death fades, and life emerges in a new form. Nearly ten years after The Wind Rises, anime master Hayao Miyazaki (known for Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro) returned with a new semi-autobiographical and fantastical masterpiece: The Boy and the Heron.
Miyazaki, in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, created another enchanting film, a remarkable feat considering his announced retirement after The Wind Rises at the 2013 Venice Film Festival. Could this truly be his last work? If so, it’s a magnificent farewell from a legendary director.
The Boy and the Heron was awarded with the Oscar for Best Animation feature.
