In the Mood for Love in Nederland in première ging.
On 21 March 2026, it was exactly 25 years since In the Mood for Love premiered in the Netherlands. A quarter of a century later, Wong Kar Wai’s spellbinding masterpiece remains irresistible: a film less about love itself than about everything left unsaid.
Hong Kong, 1962. Mr Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs Chan (Maggie Cheung) meet as neighbours in a crowded apartment building. When they discover that their spouses are having an affair, they cautiously seek comfort in each other’s company. What begins as consolation grows into a profound bond. Yet their feelings are never given room to fully unfold. They live in glances held a moment too long, chance encounters on a staircase, and the silence between two people who know that longing can be most powerful when it remains unspoken.
Every movement, shadow and sound plays a part in Wong Kar Wai’s hypnotic choreography of absence and desire. The lush cinematography of Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin, Shigeru Umebayashi’s melancholy melodies and the warmth of Nat King Cole’s voice come together with Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung’s restrained performances to create cinema at its most sublime: sensual, timeless and heartbreakingly beautiful.
In the Mood for Love is not simply a film you watch; it is one you slowly disappear into. An ode to the beauty of the unattainable, to memories fading like a view through a misted window, and to a love that perhaps endures precisely because it was never fully realised.
