Van de Israëlische makers Yuval Abraham en Rachel Szor, twee van de vier regisseurs achter de Oscarwinnende documentaire No Other Land, komt NAZA: een indringend onderzoek naar de oorlog in Gaza en de mechanismen achter de grootschalige dood van Palestijnse burgers. Gefilmd tijdens de nachtelijke uren op de daken van Tel Aviv onderzoeken Abraham en Szor de systemen en besluitvorming achter de Israëlische bombardementen op Gaza. Vanuit hun positie als Israëli’s stellen ze een ongemakkelijke en fundamentele vraag: hoe kan een samenleving de ontmenselijking van een andere groep mensen toestaan – en welke mechanismen maken dat mogelijk?

De film bouwt voort op journalistiek onderzoek van The Guardian, +972 Magazine en Local Call uit de periode 2023–2025. Maar NAZA gaat verder dan de onthullingen alleen. De camera richt zich ook op wat níét wordt uitgesproken: op de stiltes, het wegkijken en de afstand tussen individuele verantwoordelijkheid en een systeem waarvan mensen deel uitmaken.
Na No Other Land, waarin Abraham en Szor samen met de Palestijnse filmmakers Basel Adra en Hamdan Ballal de verdrijving en vernietiging van gemeenschappen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever vastlegden, richten zij hun blik nu op hun eigen Israëlische samenleving. NAZA is daarmee een confronterende film over oorlog en ontmenselijking, maar bovenal over verantwoordelijkheid – en over de noodzaak om de stilte te doorbreken.
Naza ging afgelopen week in wereldpremière op het Filmfestival van Venetië.
From Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, two of the four directors behind the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, comes NAZA: a powerful investigation into the war in Gaza and the mechanisms behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians. Filmed at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, Abraham and Szor examine the systems and decision-making processes behind Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. From their position as Israelis, they confront a deeply unsettling and fundamental question: how can a society allow the dehumanisation of another group of people – and what mechanisms make this possible?
The film builds on investigative reporting by The Guardian, +972 Magazine and Local Call. But NAZA goes beyond the revelations of journalism alone. The camera also turns towards what remains unspoken: the silences, the looking away, and the distance between individual responsibility and the larger system of which people are a part.
Following No Other Land, in which Abraham and Szor, together with Palestinian filmmakers Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal, documented the displacement and destruction of Palestinian communities in the West Bank, they now turn their gaze towards their own Israeli society. NAZA is a confronting film about war and dehumanisation, but above all about responsibility – and the urgent need to break the silence.
