Two legends of Italian cinema, one unforgettable encounter. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Ettore Scola’s masterpiece Una Giornata Particolare (1977) returns to the big screen. Starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni in two of their finest performances, this timeless classic is a deeply moving story of loneliness, longing and unexpected human connection, set against the ominous backdrop of Fascist Italy.
Rome, May 8, 1938. As the city gathers to celebrate Adolf Hitler’s historic visit to Benito Mussolini, housewife Antonietta (Sophia Loren) is left alone in her apartment building. Her husband and six children have joined the festivities, leaving her to attend to the daily household chores. A chance encounter brings her into contact with her neighbour Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni), a former radio broadcaster dismissed from his job because of his homosexuality. Both outsiders in their own way, they discover an unexpected sense of understanding, tenderness and freedom in each other’s company. As Fascist propaganda echoes from the radio, their fleeting encounter becomes an extraordinary day that will leave a lasting impression on both their lives.
With its beautifully muted colours, intimate storytelling and extraordinary lead performances, Ettore Scola created one of the most powerful films in Italian cinema. Both a deeply affecting portrait of two lonely souls and a poignant indictment of oppression, intolerance and conformity, Una Giornata Particolare remains as relevant today as it was upon its release. Fifty years on, this acclaimed masterpiece has lost none of its emotional power. A profoundly human and unforgettable cinematic experience about finding connection in a world determined to keep people apart.
